Leadership Opportunities

Sigma Chi is the pre-eminent undergraduate leadership development organization in North America. UBC's Sigma Chi's are dedicated to being actively involved, and taking leadership roles on our campus and in our community. Our chapter boasts campus leaders in every aspect of student life. From presidents of campus clubs,  to Undergraduate Society Councillors, and even members of the UBC Board of Governors (the highest governing body at the university). Wherever there is student leadership, there are Sigma Chi's. We believe in personal development, and place an emphasis on individual growth, and learning for all of our members. Sigma Chi provides an atmosphere where growth is not only encouraged, and nurtured, but is expected of our brothers. We truly believe that while men join fraternities, leaders of men join Sigma Chi.

Balfour Leadership Training Workshop

Held annually, undergraduate and alumni brothers gather in the largest fraternity conference in North America. This workshop serves several purposes, including:

  • To engage in values-based leadership concepts for application as a chapter officer and throughout life.
  • To orient new chapter officers, articulate the scope and opportunities for job planning and defining officer job responsibilities.
  • Establish a vision and strategic plan for the chapter.

Placed into specific officer teams and then divided further into alumni-led discussion groups, undergraduates spend three days in discussions and strategy sessions. The curriculum that they utilize is of unparalleled quality and has been developed by experts in the field of leadership.

The young men of today increasingly look to organizations to teach the skills of leadership, and as L.G. Balfour envisioned, the young men of Sigma Chi find these teachings in the Workshop. It is about teaching young men and giving them the courage to make a significant difference, not only in Sigma Chi, but in their personal lives as well. It is about turning principle into practice.

Horizons Leadership Development

Taking place in beautiful Snowbird, Utah, Horizons is an life-changing experience for successful undergraduate applicants. If selected, the experience is fully paid for by the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

At Horizons, select undergraduates experience a six-day immersion in state-of-the-art learning for both mind and body. Participants explore the inner territories of leadership. The Sigma Chi Foundation Horizons program was designed for the brightest Sigma Chi sophomores who want to improve their skills and make a difference. Working with professionals who have fashioned innovative leadership programs for Fortune 500 companies, Sigma Chi introduced Horizons in 1999.

Sigma Chi's core principles focus on the individual, on the development of one's inner self. Horizons has a similar focus, stressing the development of character as the foundation for effective leadership. In this way, Horizons remains true to what Sigma Chi has always been about

The primary purpose of Horizons is for young leaders to explore the inner territories of leadership and learn:

  • How leadership is directly linked to values and character.
  • Practices of leadership and specific leadership skills.
  • Discovering and utilizing one's full potential for a lifetime of leadership.
  • The young men who “graduate” Horizons:
  • Enjoy continued mentoring and support from their facilitators and peers
  • Become mentors to others by reflecting and putting into practice what they have learned.

Horizons pushes our Fraternity's brightest to think and act differently. The experience is just a first step, the beginning of a journey that will change these young men-and in so doing-will change our world.

Journey & CHOICES Chapter Improvement Programs

Recently introduced to the fraternity, Journeys workshops are offered to undergraduate chapters to help develop and foster several different areas. The available workshops include those focusing on brotherhood and strategic visioning, and all workshops focus on promoting values-based decision making and the path to living the ideals held proudly the fraternity.

Additionally, CHOICES workshops are offered at no cost by the international fraternity. Choices is an intensive one-day workshop aimed at promoting responsible decisons surrounding consumption, peer pressure, and personal health. The program was developed in partnership with the Betty Ford Clinic and is aimed to promote responsible drinking and consumption, values-based decision making, and responsible life choices. Sigma Chi UBC typically holds this workshop every 1-2 years for its members.
