Leadership Opportunities

Sigma Chi is the pre-eminent undergraduate leadership development organization in North America. UBC Sigma Chis are dedicated to being actively involved, and taking leadership roles on our campus and in our community. Our chapter boasts campus leaders in every aspect of student life. From presidents of campus clubs, to Undergraduate Society Councillors, and even members of the UBC Board of Governors- the highest governing body at the university- wherever there is student leadership- there are Sigma Chi's. We believe in personal development, and place an emphasis on individual growth, and learning for all of our members. Sigma Chi provides an atmosphere where growth is not only encouraged, and nurtured, but is expected of our brothers. We truly believe that while men join fraternities, leaders of men join Sigma Chi.
This mission of personal development is supported by Sigma Chi International through a series of dynamic programs offered to undergraduate brothers. Our world-class leadership programs offer brothers a once in a lifetime experience of personal reflection, leadership development, and international brotherhood.
Whether it be taking on an executive position in our chapter or taking advantage of one of the many resources our international headquarters provides in leadership development, you'll grow as both a leader and an individual at Sigma Chi.
Balfour Leadership Training Workshop
Over the course of three days each summer, more than 150 professionally-trained Sigma Chi alumni interact with more than 1,700 undergraduate brothers.
- To engage in values-based leadership concepts for application as a chapter officer and throughout life
- To orient new chapter officers, articulate the scope and opportunities for job planning and defining officer job responsibilities
- Establish a vision and strategic plan for the chapter
Placed into specific officer teams and then divided further into alumni-led discussion groups, undergraduates spend three days in discussions and strategy sessions. The curriculum that they utilize is of unparalleled quality and has been developed by experts in the field of leadership.
The young men of today increasingly look to organizations to teach the skills of leadership, and as L.G. Balfour envisioned, the young men of Sigma Chi find these teachings in the Workshop. It is about teaching young men and giving them the courage to make a significant difference, not only in Sigma Chi, but in their personal lives as well. It is about turning principle into practice.
Horizons
The Experience
At Horizons, select undergraduates experience a six-day immersion in state-of-the-art learning for both mind and body. Participants
explore the inner territories of leadership. The Sigma Chi Foundation Horizons program was designed for the brightest Sigma Chi sophomores who want to improve their skills and make a difference. Working with professionals who have fashioned innovative leadership programs for Fortune 500 companies, Sigma Chi introduced Horizons in 1999.
Outstanding young men complete a comprehensive application process to participate in the program held in the mountains of Snowbird, Utah. This week-long program is provided at no cost to the young men. The participants are guided by a team of alumni faculty who have been carefully chosen and professionally trained to facilitate this program. These are individuals who share a commitment to Sigma Chi values and self-improvement.
The Purpose
Sigma Chi's core principles focus on the individual, on the development of one's inner self. Horizons has a similar focus, stressing the development of character as the foundation for effective leadership. In this way, Horizons remains true to what Sigma Chi has always been about
The primary purpose of Horizons is for young leaders to explore the inner territories of leadership and learn:
- How leadership is directly linked to values and character

- Practices of leadership and specific leadership skills
- Discovering and utilizing one's full potential for a lifetime of leadership
The young men who “graduate” Horizons:
- Enjoy continued mentoring and ongoing support from their facilitators and peers
- Become mentors to others by reflecting and putting into practice what they have learned
Horizons pushes our Fraternity's brightest to think and act differently. The experience is just a first step, the beginning of a journey that will change these young men-and in so doing-will change our world.

Cornerstone
No program better illustrates the goals and aspirations of the Making a Difference Campaign than Cornerstone. Introduced in California in 2003, Cornerstone provides our alumni leaders with the tools and training they need to efficiently support our undergraduate chapters.
By the Numbers
- Cornerstone is in the pilot stage at 40 chapters, with more than 84 mentors in the United States and Canada.
- Three regions—California, the Southeast and the Great Lakes—have been rolled out.
- Expanding to all 12 regions and all chapters will take three to five years and will include 540 mentors.
- The endowment needed to train, maintain and supervise each region in perpetuity is $4 million.
Mentor Training
At every chapter, at least two alumni mentors participate in a three-day, professionally-designed training session to learn the skills and abilities necessary to lead today's undergraduates.
Each mentor has five goals:
- Enhance the scholastic focus and performance of the chapter
- Create a living environment dedicated to the responsible use of alcohol
- Instill in the chapter an understanding of Sigma Chi's core values
- Make the Sigma Chi experience a life-long endeavor
- Develop leaders within the chapter.
After two years, results show that Cornerstone makes a huge difference. In addition to tying together the Fraternity's other key programs, it teaches undergraduates how to set priorities and manage their affairs with controlled behavior.
