Congratulations to the Fall Class of 2009!

By Graham Coombe on November 30, 2009

On behalf of Sigma Chi and our many supporters, we would like to give a huge congratulations to our new initiates of the Delta Omicron chapter! Throughout rush, pledgeship, and initiation, we strongly believed that our fall pledge class would further strengthen our chapter. As much as we are thankful for our new initiates, we could never have pulled off a successful semester without the tremendous hours of work by our brothers, especially the Rush chair, the Magister, and the Ritual chair. With great support, they were able to prepare and educate one of our largest pledge class we seen thus far!

First wave of pledges at bids day!

Second wave of pledges!

Strong alumni and active presence to support the rushees at formal rush (Chan Centre).

Grand finale! The official fall class of 2009 with their Magister, you guys finally made it!

Brother Jack Layton Pays a Visit

By Shawn Stewart on September 11, 2009

With September and Recruitment in full swing, the UBC Sigs were excited to be visited by the leader of the New Democratic Party, and member of the Gamma Lamda Chapter of Sigma Chi at McGill University. While Brother Layton was on campus giving a speech to constituents and students alike, he graciously made time to come and hang out with his brothers and our Sweetheart Jessica Pice, at the Rush Booth, as well as at the Gallery Pub later on that night. Thanks for dropping by Brother Layton, come back anytime. Once a Sig, Always a Sig.

Derby Days Endless Summer

By Keith Martin on September 10, 2009

On September 6, one night after the huge Toga Party at the House, Sigs and the ladies of Panhel geared up for another epic night of fun at Tonic Nightclub downtown for Derby Days' Endless Summer party to help with fundraising.

The feature of the night was the annual Dance-Off competition, in which each sorority competes to win additional Derby Days points with their performance. This was the best one seen in recent memory, with teams putting in a lot of hours to work on their performances - even to cut their own tracks! In the end, Alpha Gamma Delta came away with the top spot dancing to Calle Ocho, followed closely by Gamma Phi Beta and Alpha Phi respectively. Thank you to the Derby Darlings, Derby Daddies, and other participants who put in so much time and effort! It was incredibly fun to watch, and everyone had an amazing night.

Toga Toga Toga!

By Shawn Stewart on September 9, 2009

Sigma Chi kicked off its fall rush with a rager of a party. Clad in togas of all colours and varieties, they welcomed all to the House to show them a good time. And what a time it was.  With music bumping and pong to be played, the bros kept the party hoppin’ until the late hours of the night. The party was the biggest house party this place has seen in a while, which goes to show that Sigma Chi is well on its way to another huge year. Thanks to all who came--looks like you had a great time and keep an eye out for events to come.

Pig Roast

By Mike McDonald on September 1, 2009

Last Sunday, Brothers Colin James, Ian Schimpf and myself woke up at 6am to begin preparing a full pig for roasting.  We had it dressed and on the spit by 8.  It took nine hours on the spit to cook the 75lb pig but my goodness was it ever worth it.  The pork was moist and delicious; as was the chicken we served with it.  All in all, we served fifty-five peopleThanks to everyone for coming out to share the occasion with us, it was certainly not something you see everyday.

Special thanks to Ian and Colin for waking up with me at 6am and for spending a lot of the day cooking with me.  Thanks to GV, Shane and my boy Tanner for helping make the sides.  Thanks to GV, Jake, Graham and Justin for helping to serve.  Thanks to Raja for taking care of distributing beverages.  Thanks to Leo, Shane, Andrew and Ian for helping to clean up.  Finally, thanks to the olympic house boys, Mike and Tim, for lending me their van to pick up and return the 5', 150lb barbeque.

Here's to a great pig roast!

Derby Days Volleyball

By Keith Martin on August 14, 2009

On August 8, Sigma Chi organized the inaugural Derby Days Volleyball Tournament, raising $460. After securing some courts and praying for the rain and cold to stay away, the tournament was an immense success and is sure to grow and become a mainstay for future Derby Days campaigns. Nine teams total competed for the top prize down at Locarno Beach - six sorority teams, one Sigma Chi alumni team, and one community team - with representation from Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Alpha Theta, Alpha Delta Phi, and Sigma Chi.

The round robin action was fierce, with the ADPi/Alpha Delt looking very strong in Pool A, and the Bump, Set, Drunk community team looking good in Pool B. The last two spots for the championship elimination were contested down to the final two matches. The last spot had to be decided by a 7-point playoff after GPB and ADPi 2 were tied in wins and points at the end! ADPi 2 came away with the win to make it in, with the Sig Alum team squeezing in to round out the top 4.

The elimination matches features some awesome volleyball teams competing hard to win. Bump, Set, Drunk and ADPi/Alpha Delt came away with the semifinal wins to make it into the final. The final was epic. ADPi/Alpha Delt took the win in the first game, and both teams played hard in the second, leading to 16 extra points and some long rallies until ADPi/Alpha Delt finally came away with the win by 2, capping an unbelievable come-from-behind win.

With the win, the team members get free tickets to Endless Summer on August 6. Congratulations to them! Thank you everyone for making this event a huge success in its first year.
